
All About Me
For most of my adult life, I struggled with back pain, hip pain and typically a sore and stiff shoulder. The challenge (besides being exhausted) was that I had no injuries to speak of. No functional issue showed up on x-rays or other tests, and I could still dance and lift weights. But walking, standing or sitting for more than a few minutes had become excruciating. Walking my dog one day, I worried I would need some sort of walking assistance in the near future despite not yet being 50 years old! Luckily, a physiotherapist introduced me to the world of somatics.
As I dove in to learn more, I discovered that the more I practiced the movements, the less pain I experienced. Before, I had such pain in my right hip that walking was almost impossible. After practicing somatics, the pain was almost gone. Before, my foot was in such agony I could only wear the flattest of shoes. Now that pain is gone. Where once I could only sit in a chair for 10 minutes, now I can sit comfortably.
It is not a magic cure of some sort, and I can’t say I live my life free of pain all the time. But now I have the tools to know what to do when my body gets stiff and sore, thanks to Hanna Somatics. Now I have the knowledge and ability to use gentle movements to calm myself when stressed, to relieve anxiety when feeling overwhelmed and to improve my sleep.
